On July 9th, 2023, three HOYA UK employees and ten customers took part in a challenging hike up Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. The team spent the night in Betws-Y-Coed, before setting off early to ensure the best weather. They followed the difficult Snowdon miner’s track, taking just over 6 hours to reach the summit and return to base.
The hike was organised to raise funds for HOYA’s international charity partner, Orbis UK, contributing to a larger goal of raising £50,000 over three years, to support the establishment of a Green Vision Centre in India. The centre will provide essential eye care services, including vision screenings and affordable eye care solutions, to underserved populations, to help prevent avoidable vision loss.
Reaching the summit of Snowdon demonstrated the team's dedication to the cause and encouraged many to contribute. The team hit their 4K target with an impressive £4,020 raised from the hike.
All the hikers shared positive feedback about the experience, mentioning the strong personal connections created between HOYA, optometrists, staff, and patients, the mutual benefits of raising money for Orbis UK and the opportunity for volunteers to engage in adventurous outdoor activities.
One participant said:
“Being able to raise money for a charity like Orbis is mutually beneficial, firstly for the charity, but also for creating a more personal experience between Hoya and the practice as well as the practice and patients, enjoying such a challenging but enjoyable climb up a mountain together”.
Another participant was equally enthusiastic about the experience, saying:
“So pleased to have helped. Fabulous hotel, HOYA looked after us well. Lovely to meet you and made lots of new friends. A day I won't forget”.
Overall, HOYA UK has once again demonstrated its commitment to making a positive impact locally, by participating in fundraising activities, and globally through their support of Orbis UK's Green Vision Centre.
