Why We Believe in Being ECP-Focused, not Consumer-Focused

Focusing on our partnerships with practices like yours is foundational to how we work at Hoya. We believe that by focusing on you, the ECP, and not the consumer directly, we are able to grow better and create the best eye care solutions.

The difference between being ECP-focused versus consumer-focused comes down to how we work with your patients. At the end of the day, that’s who we are creating our products for. In an age where healthcare literacy and eye care adherence are low, your patients rely on your expertise to prescribe the best solution.

When it comes down to it, we don’t want to treat your patients like our consumers. We will only get in the way of better care, and miss out on a partnership that helps us excel together.

Understanding What ECP-Focused Means

ECP-focused partnerships change the equation. They are built with the understanding that a symbiotic relationship comes first, and bears sweeter fruit. By focusing on being a partner first, it means that patients receive the best solutions. We each get to focus on our strengths and what makes us unique. You bring your years of training and expertise to bear to help patients by educating, consulting, and prescribing. We bring years of expertise on bending light to create the best eye care solutions to support you as you care for patients.

Educate your patients on the value you provide.

By working together, instead of us treating your patients like they are our consumers, we can build each other up. This doesn’t stop at products; it’s a flow of information and best practices. We hear from ECPs around the nation on how successful our lenses, treatments, and coatings are. We use this to inform the modifications and innovations that you need. We also pull in our resources and provide educational support tools and resources because we know your success is our success.

The Healthcare Knowledge Gap

Patients need education right now. Online tools that help them choose lenses is no substitute for working with an expert to reach a prescription. This is especially true because healthcare literacy is very low in the United States –research shows only 12% of the population is at the most proficient level. Adherence to annual exams and proper eye care are also low. A study from 2016 found that less than half of patients were adherent to their eye exams, and the primary causes were lack of awareness on insurance benefits, lack of awareness or prioritization of an exam, or education level.

Because education and awareness are two main challenges that lead to non-adherence, pulling patients out of practices with online tools doesn’t help create better care. It stands as direct opposition.

The only way to create better outcomes is your expertise and education of patients. This is another reason why you are essential to the process, and why suppliers need to work with you – the ECP – not in spite of you.
