BANGKOK– 17 July, 2024 – HOYA Vision Care, a leader in optical technology innovation, took part in the 5th World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WCPOS) held on 11-13 July 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia. The event was held in conjunction with the 14th Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology Annual Scientific Meeting (14th MSO-ASM).
Honouring their commitment to share knowledge and technical advances in the field of myopia management, HOYA Vision Care, a gold event sponsor, hosted a lunch symposium, Confidence through Evidence – MiYOSMART in Daily Practice, hosted by Prof. Dominique Bremond-Gignac, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at University Hospital Necker-Enfants malades and Paris Cité University in Paris.
The symposium kicked-off with a presentation by Prof. Bruce Weizhong Lan, Vice Director of the Aier Institute of Optometry and Vision Science, who discussed misconceptions around the amount of outdoor light needed for myopia management. He highlighted the positive effects of light in myopia management based on the latest research and advocated for its inclusion as part of a holistic myopia management strategy.
The symposium also featured Dr. Sunder Ramasamy, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara and Oasis Eye Specialist, who shared his insights on combination treatment in myopia management. Through sharing a series of case studies, Dr. Ramasamy spoke about combination treatment, such as using MiYOSMART spectacle lenses together with atropine drops as a potential strategy for myopia management - especially for patients at risk of developing high myopia. He also discussed the importance of co-management between ophthalmologists and optometrists through co-referrals for atropine and prescriptions of photochromic myopia management spectacle lenses, such as MiYOSMART Chameleon.
Prof. Dominique Bremond-Gignac concluded the symposium by discussing the importance of customized myopia management, as each child has unique refractive errors, lifestyles, and risk factors. She noted that while results from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are important when deciding which myopia management solution to prescribe, these results may differ based on the individual patient as efficacies reported by RCTs are based on averages. It is important for Eye Care Professionals to take a holistic view of myopia management, looking beyond just the myopia management solution in order to achieve a better clinical outcome.
Prof. Bremond-Gignac also discussed the management of syndromic myopia, highlighting that syndromic myopia may require different management due to different aetiology. However, she noted that all myopic children need to be treated – even those with syndromic myopia. In addition, Prof. Bremond-Gignac also shared her insights from her population-based survey research and emphasized the need for patient education.
HOYA Vision Care is committed to fighting and controlling the growing problem of myopia around the world by continually conducting evidence-based research on the MiYOSMART spectacle lenses and sharing industry knowledge and professional insights in the field of myopia.
