Breaking down the technology behind MiYOSMART iQ

When it comes to myopia, we believe children deserve more than just vision correction. They deserve a powerful solution that stops myopia progression in its tracks. So we leveraged years of research and clinical experience to develop our most advanced myopia control spectacle lens yet, MiYOSMART iQ.

With MiYOSMART iQ, 9 out of 10 children showed no clinically relevant myopia progression* in the first 12 months of wear.1, 2 MiYOSMART iQ helps children across a wide age range, with children aged 4-12 participating in the randomised controlled trial. It is HOYA’s first spectacle lens reported to be effective in children from the age of 4 as a monotherapy.1-3 Now, ECPs can enable earlier intervention and more effective outcomes for pediatric patients than ever before.

What made this breakthrough possible, and what’s the best way to explain it to patients who may not know this option exists? Let’s break down the key technologies behind MiYOSMART iQ, along with patient-friendly terminology that will help you educate others on the benefits.

D.I.M.S. Technology

Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) technology creates simultaneous focus and defocus. This technology focuses light in front of the retina, activating the defocus signal that tells the eye to slow its axial elongation. At the same time, light lands on the retina for clear distance vision.

  • In patient-friendly terms: The words “defocus signal” might sound confusing at first. How can something that “defocuses” help a child see more clearly? The easiest answer is that this signal isn’t about focusing the image a child sees, but rather about redirecting where the light lands inside the eye. When light rays focus behind the retina like in regular single vision lenses, that can encourage the eye to grow too fast, which worsens near-sightedness. D.I.M.S. technology is a kind of trick that sends the opposite signal. By focusing some of the light rays in front of the retina, it tells the eye to slow its growth, slowing the progression of myopia.

Triple Enhanced Design (TED)

Triple Enhanced Design (TED) takes D.I.M.S. technology a step further by delivering stronger treatment in a more targeted way. First, there’s a smaller clear zone with defocus segments positioned closer to the center. This activates a “sweet spot” on the near peripheral retina that we call the “Smart Zone.” There is also a higher defocus power delivering a stronger defocus signal. Moving outward, the treatment zone extends farther in the periphery with more defocus segments.

  • In patient-friendly terms: Although the MiYOSMART iQ lens is designed to look just like any other lens, there’s a lot happening that you won’t see just by looking at it. Different areas of the lens have different tools that work together. There’s a clear zone in the center that gives the child sharp vision, surrounded by an extended treatment zone that delivers stronger, more targeted treatment. This Triple Enhanced treatment provides simultaneous focus and defocus for clear natural vision while effectively controlling your child's myopia.

Smart Zone

The “Smart Zone” is our way of referring to a near-peripheral retinal zone shown to be most responsive to myopic defocus. It’s a useful phrase because the near-peripheral retina can play a pivotal role in regulating eye growth mechanisms, influencing long-term myopia control.2, 4 By continuously activating the "Smart Zone," we maximize myopia control effectiveness.

  • In patient-friendly terms: We coined the term “Smart Zone” to describe the area on the retina that is most responsive to the signal that controls myopia progression. MiYOSMART iQ is constantly targeting this crucial area of the eye while the child is wearing the lens.

True Form (Optimized Aspheric Design)

MiYOSMART iQ lenses are now available with an optimized aspheric backside design, taking optical quality to the next level. Using FreeForm technology, prescription values are optimized on the back surface of the lens to reduce optical aberrations and offer sharper image quality across the lens. And with an edge thickness reduced by up to 10% compared to a standard spectacle lens5, MiYOSMART iQTF offers improved frame compatibility and a more aesthetic appearance.

  • In patient-friendly terms: We know kids really care how their glasses look6, especially when their prescriptions increase. Simply put, these lenses look better because they’re thinner at the edges. They’re compatible with more frames, giving children more options to match their style and wear them with confidence. Also, because the prescription is optimized across the lens, MiYOSMART iQTF ensures clearer vision in everyday viewing situations, no matter where children look. They can shift from books to screens to sports and play with sharp sight in all directions.

S.P.A.R.K. Coating

Designed for children and built to last, this protective coating is Scratch-resistant, provides the Protection they need, and delivers an Advanced solution, Ready for Kids (S.P.A.R.K.). The stats are impressive: This coating is 50% more scratch-resistant than the previous generation7, offers 5x greater water resistance7, 8, is easy to clean even after nearly 3 years of daily use, 8, and blocks 100% of harmful UV rays8 from the front surface. It also supports high light transmission while reducing glare and reflections for consistent visual clarity.9 Altogether, the architecture consists of 9 layers loaded with desirable features, all packed into a single coating.

  • In patient-friendly terms: S.P.A.R.K. coating stands up to all the typical challenges kids throw at their lenses: bumps, knocks, scratches, smudges, fingerprints, dust, liquids, and wiping. It delivers easier to care for lenses that are more durable and easier to clean, with the added benefits of clearer lenses and full UV protection.

*Clinically relevant myopia progression defined as Spherical Equivalent Refraction change equal to or superior to -0.50D over 12 months of wear. Outcomes for myopic children aged 4 to 12 years. They may vary per age group and other parameters at the start of MiYOSMART iQ treatment.
